Algebra II

Foerster The book runs for $60 and up brand new. Here is a link to a site to buy them used. People need to check the book condition; price goes up along w/ the quality. (You get what you pay for). Borrow or buy one at back to school sales. These are usable on SAT tests, and I want the kids to be proficient at using these tools. Art and Music History
Teacher: Cheri Lundin Age/Grade Level: 7th-10th (open to older students, but not younger) Description: We will cover the history of Western art and music, discussing how world views are shown through the art and music of a culture. We will look at representative samples of art work, and listen to various excerpts of musical selections. This is a two-quarter class. Homework: There will occasionally be art projects to do in class, but that is not the emphasis. Depending on the number of students in the class, each student will be asked to do a presentation on a selected artist or musician or both. There is no required outside reading except for the presentation. It would be helpful for the student to listen to additional music of selected composers during the week. CHEMISTRY
Teacher: Jeff Banning Age/Grade Level: 10th-12th grade (9th grade with prior approval from instructor) Students need to have desire to learn Chemistry, and an adequate math background-strong knowledge of algebraI is essential. Description: This class is intended to be a college preparatory class rather than a survey class so it will challenge the students. It will include basic chemistry concepts to be studied with emphasis on atomic structure, chemical bonding, nomenclature, physical states of matter, properties of gases, chemical equations, stoichiometry, acid-base and oxidation-reduction concepts, chemical kinetics, and thermodynamics. Lab experiments will be performed. Tentatively I plan on having 1 Thurs. morning timeslot devoted to lab every 3 or 4 lectures. Lab write-ups will be completed by student at home. I also tentatively plan on a visit to my lab for tour purposes & experiments that might be a bit more hazardous. Homework: Read each chapter and work on each problem assigned. A fair amount of reading and homework is expected of each student. Exams will be administered periodically so as to evaluate the progress of the students. Parents will need to keep student accountable for all homework, lab journals, and exam readiness. A Child’s Geography: Exploring His Earth
Teacher: Paul & Lisa Anderson Age/Grade Level: 4th-6th Description: Students will study what is under our feet, over our heads, and in the world around us—the atmosphere, the hydrosphere, the lithosphere---and then how to get around this world---maps, latitude, and longitude, and countries of the earth; all the while, seeing Him everywhere. Teachers: Sandie Blaha Age/Grade Level: 2nd - 4th Description: This complete natural science curriculum from Eagle's Wings is structured around the creation events in Genesis 1. Topics include Creation, The Universe, The Earth, Rocks and Minerals, Weather, The Plant Kingdom and Ecology, The Animal Kingdom, Animal Anatomy and Physiology, Animal Ecology, and Man. This is a hands-on approach to learning science with many cut-and-paste activities. We will continue with this book that we started last year. Homework: No homework Materials Required: Considering God’s Creation student book. The publisher is Eagle’s Wings and the authors are Mortimer and Smith. The students will also need a three ring notebook, scissors, pencil, markers, a glue stick, and maybe a zippered pencil pouch or something to hold small projects that won’t fit in the notebook. CREATING A SCIENCE FAIR PROJECT
Teacher: Roy Swart Age/Grade Level: 3rd-6th Description: Students will learn how to plan and participate in a science fair. Students will be creating their own science fair project. Roy will make himself available to help the students with their projects and decision making regarding what project to make. The goal of the class is for students to become knowledgeable on what is required to participate in a science fair so that in the future they can present a project at Intel’s science fair. Homework: There will be outside work and research involved. The amount will depend on student’s age and project. Approx. 1 to 2 hours of work requiring parent help and another 1 to 2 hours of work for student (per week). Materials required: This will also depend on the project that your student chooses to do. ENGLISH/BIBLE INTERPRETATION
Teacher: Pastor Rick Age/Grade Level: 11th & 12th Description: The English class is comprehensive covering writing, literature, speech, linguistics, and grammar/punctuation. The Bible class teaches how to interpret and get insights from the Bible. The two classes interrelate. Learning linguistic skills will help students better understand the Bible. Students must take both. Homework: About 8 hours of homework per week; one hour per non-class day per subject. Geography

Teacher: Rosalie Baugh Age/Grade Level: High School Description: We will use the textbook as a springboard for project oriented coursework, with a heavy emphasis on the practical application of the material studied. Students will be held accountable for the development of healthy habits through daily disciplines in spiritual, mental, emotional, and physical areas of life. Examples of class and/or individual projects include: Food Journal with comparison to personalized food pyramid, development of a personal fitness program, investigation of medications for common illnesses, use of supplements, poor lifestyle choice consequences-understanding addictions, devotional diary, emergency preparedness, read and respond to books from Christian authors on relationships, mental and emotional health, and more. Paddle to the Sea (Clancy book study) Teacher: Kim Eiles Age/Grade Level: 5th – 7th Description: Join us as we travel with “Paddle to the Sea” through the Great Lakes and on to the Atlantic Ocean. As we follow his journey, we will learn about the geography, the history, the people, the industry and natural history of the Great Lakes region. Materials Required Notebook with dividers, pencil with eraser, fine point sharpie marker, colored pencils, Paddle to the Sea by Clancy Holling (I can purchase these through Amazon for approx.. $9.19 with free shipping. I will need to know if you want me to purchase yours by August 30th. You will also need Geography through Literature Map set by Beautiful Feet Books (I can order a set of four maps for 4 of Holling Clancy Holling books—we will be studying 3 of these books this year. The cost is $9.95 a set if I have an order of 8. Therefore, I plan to order these for the whole class unless you tell me not to order them for your family by August 25th. Poetry
Teacher: Laura Gantenbein Age/Grade Level: 6th-12th Description: Students will be introduced to a new poet and his/her poetry each week. They will also write an original poem; each week a new style will be introduced. Students will create a lovely poetry journal using original art, magazine cut-outs, photos, etc. These turn out to be excellent keepsakes. Homework: Students will write an original poem each week and decorate and mount new poem in art journal. Materials Required Teacher will purchase art journals. Quilting 101
Teachers: Sue Rorman Age/Grade Level: 6th-12th (needs some knowledge of sewing machine; how to thread it, etc.) Description: Learn the basics of quilting by creating 6 - 12 skill-builder blocks! Girls and guys welcome!! Blocks can be put together as wall hangings, or trivets for gifts, or made into computer bags, pillows, whatever you'd like. (non-wearable, unless you know how to sew from a pattern already!)
